Jean-Michel Basquiat’s work乱涂(德ath of Michael Stewart)lays bare police brutality, racism, graffiti, and the art world. Basquiat painted this on the wall of Keigh Haring’s studio in 1983 to commemorate the death of a young Black artist who died from injuries sustained while in police custody. Highly relevant both then and now, this work and this book depicting it explore Basquiat’s response to anti-Black racism and police brutality, along with samples of artwork from Stewart’s estate, newspaper clippings, and pieces by Haring, Andy Warhol, and other artists of the time. Text by Chaédria LaBouvier (writer and Basquiat scholar), Nancy Spector, J. Faith Almiron, and Greg Tate is accompanied by contributions from Luc Sante, Carlo McCormick, Jeffrey Deitch, Kenny Scharf, Fred Braithwaite, and Michelle Shocked.
